Big Cats for Pets?
There are exotic pets and then there are really exotic pets. Tigers and lions definitely qualify among the latter. If you’ve given some thought to keeping a big cat as a pet there are some important facts you should know first.
Many people often make the mistake of thinking that non-domestic cats, especially when they are young, are similar in nature to domestic cats. While they may have the same ancestry, the two couldn’t be any more different. One of the most important aspects regarding varies species of cats is that they have very different temperaments. If you think your domestic cat has a tendency to be moody, that’s nothing compared to a big non-domestic cat. In addition, non-domestic cats have tendencies that are far different than domestic cats. On the minor end of the spectrum it may include something such as marking their territory with urine to something far worse such as showing aggression; even if you’ve raised them from a kitten. This isn’t something that can necessarily be trained out of the animal. It is a natural tendency that is prone to pop up at any given time.
It is also important to remember that these animals are natural predators. Even if you are providing fresh food for them every day that doesn’t mean they won’t be prone to act on those instincts. When there are small animals and children around, as well as adults, the very strength and size of these animals can be a serious threat.
You also need to be prepared for what it will mean to care for the animals in terms of proper housing and equipment, which can be expensive. While it can be relatively inexpensive to purchase larger cats for pets, that doesn’t mean it won’t be expensive to properly care for the animal, especially as it grows larger.
These animals cannot be properly cared for in the home as you would domestic animals or even some other exotic pets. Most such animals will need a lot of space in which to roam and be comfortable. Consider the large caged in areas where such animals live at the zoo. They are afforded that much space for a reason.
For a proper diet, large cats need a tremendous amount of raw meat; which can be very expensive. Like all animals, your new pet will need routine medical care and that means finding a veterinarian that is not only capable of but willing to treat your new pet, something that might not be very easy. Finally, big cats simply may not be legal where you live, so always be sure to research it if you do decide to go ahead with keeping a non-domestic cat as a pet.
