Pot Bellied Pigs
If you’ve never had a pig as a pet before you just might be surprised at the intelligence a pig can exhibit. Many people find pigs to have a rather engaging personality and become quite attached to their exotic pet. Some of the best advantages of keeping a pig as a pet is that it can be more readily trained than many other types of animals; is actually quite affectionate, playful and curious. You may also be surprised to learn that contrary to popular opinion pigs are not loud and are clean and odor free as well. Many individuals who cannot keep other pets because of allergies will discover that pigs are usually non-allergenic. Pot bellied pigs are the most popular type of pig to be kept as a pet. It is important to understand; however, that pot bellied pigs do require a strong commitment and a thorough understanding of their unique needs.
Due to the keen intelligence of pigs, most pot-bellied pigs can be trained to the same types of discipline as dogs. For example, they can be house trained and can also be trained to perform tricks and walk on a leash. That intelligence comes with a price; however, and you need to understand that pigs can also be somewhat sensitive and even head strong. You will need to make sure you keep your pot bellied pig properly stimulated and entertained in order to avoid boredom and the possibility of your pet becoming destructive.
Be aware also that pigs are known for constantly being in search of food. Some pigs have been known to learn how to open the refrigerator (they are smart!) as well as search out food in the cabinets and pantry. So, you’ll need to be creative about securing your food to keep your pet out of it.
Remember that pigs have a natural instinct to root and pot-belled pigs are no different. If they are not provided with soft dirt in the yard to get in their rooting time they will frequently root in the house.
While pigs tend to be sensitive and affectionate they can also be aggressive. This is mainly due to their natural inclination to be territorial. From day one you will need to train your pig to understand that the humans in the household are number one, not the pig. This means establishing rules and boundaries and helping your pig to understand “no” just as you would a dog. Positive reinforcement utilizing praise and treats works well in helping your pot bellied pig learn consistent rules.
Be aware that pigs have an average life span between 12 and 18 years, so this means choosing a pot bellied pig is a long term commitment. In addition, even though these pigs are smaller than the hogs kept for food purposes, they can still be quite large. A mature pot bellied pig can easily weight at least one hundred pounds.
To keep your pig healthy make sure you take him in for routine vaccinations and have his tusks and hoofs trimmed regularly.
